The motivation palette was presented in Sweden.

The motivation palette is an overview of motivators for human action: the question is what motivates you to do the things you do? The idea is that anyone can fill in the palette quite easily (because as human beings we are all experts in what motivates us). Motivation has many faces and they all work to a certain extent. Some more than other. Of course, every human being will have a different set of preferential strong motivators and this is why a motivation palette is handy in coaching. If the coach and the coachee can define the strong motivators for the coachee, this is the way forward for the future. Also, teachers can use the palette to motivate their students.

This is a motivation palette filled in during the workshop. If you want to make your own motivation palette, click here.

The workshop continued the search for motivation with the theory of self determination as proposed by Deci and Ryan. I their theory, the three 'gatekeepers ' of motivation are autonomy, competence and relatedness. If people can decide themselves (autonomy), their competence is neither too low, nor too high, and they feel related (to the subject or the group they are in), they will be intrinsically motivated. If one of the gatekeepers is at a lower level, they might still be motivated (be it only partially intrinsic) but if all three gatekeepers are absent, there will be no intrinsic motivation.

Of course, extrinsic motivation works as well to a certain degree but only as long as the condition of the motivation is valid (and often only temporarily).  Also, this type of motivation is weaker: people will do what they have to do but not feel stimulated to do more or excell. The good news is that there is a potential gradual transition from no motivation, via extrinsic motivation, to intrinsic motivation, but it takes expertise to support this transition. This is the domain of the teacher or coach.
